Truth Matters - Promoting A Radically God Centered View Of All Things
John 14:16-18 (ESV):
16And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. 18"I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.
"Could it be that too many of God's true children, and especially the preachers, are sinning against God by guilty silence?...I for one am waiting to hear the loud voices of the prophets and reformers sounding once more over a sluggish and drowsy church. They'll pay a price for their boldness, but the results will be worth it." - AW Tozer
We at Truth Matters are concerned with the condition of the evangelical church. This includes the "gospel" message of "easy believism" that is popular today. This world is filled with millions of people (including evangelicals) who think they are going to heaven, but are sadly mistaken (Matthew 7:13-27). One of the things we have learned many times before, but this past year in particular, is that a preacher's method does effect the message. As Ligon Duncan stated at the 2007 PCRT conference, "You cannot use a method that is fundamentally self-centered to invite people into a moral universe that is fundamentally God-centered."
We believe that the prescribed response to the Gospel is that we repent of our sins and place our faith in Jesus Christ alone for the forgiveness of our sins (Acts 20:21). God reveals through His Word alone (Sola Scriptura) that He offers Salvation by Grace alone (Sola Gratia), through Faith alone (Sola Fide), in Christ alone (Sola Christus), for His Glory alone (Soli Deo Gloria).
We need to understand that the true gospel is a call to self denial (Lk 9:23-26). It is about counting the cost of following Jesus (Lk 14:28-30). It is about surrendering to Christ as both our Lord and Savior. We believe that our response to the gospel includes both that we repent of our sins and place our faith in Jesus Christ alone for the forgiveness of our sins (Acts 20:21). This involves an understanding of our sin, and our lost, spiritually dead condition. It involves an understanding that God is Holy and Righteous, and that His Just Wrath is upon us. Yet, He demonstrated His Love for us in that, while we were yet sinners, He sent His only begotten Son Jesus Christ to die for our sins. We need to understand that Jesus Christ died and rose again for our justification.
All Believers in Christ are called to be His Witnesses. Our Witness here at Truth Matters blog includes the following:
* to glorify God by declaring Jesus Christ in all His glory as the only hope for fallen man.
* to glorify God by testifying to the excellencies of Christ
* to glorify God by unashamably declaring the Truth of Scripture as laid out within the theology of the Reformed faith.
* to glorify God by contending for the faith
* to glorify God by calling the visible church to be obedient to true Worship
* to glorify God by promoting a radically God centered view of all things
* to glorify God by honoring God's revealed Word through the practice of Biblical interpretation and discernment
The goals of our Witness described above are challenging ones. As we pursue this walk along the narrow path, we do stumble into the sin of spiritual pride. Some of the comments we receive here at Truth Matters blog criticize our efforts. Although the ones making these critiques misunderstand our motives, their comments typically come with some valid points. Constructive criticsim is always welcomed. Through God's Sanctifying Grace, our words will be more effective in reflecting the Grace, Mercy, and Love within our Lord and Savior's heart that He expresses towards this lost world, as well as His blood bought Church.
Also, the posted articles, videos, opinions, etc. expressed on this blog do not necessarily represent the views of all it's contributors. We currently have 4 contributers to Truth Matters.
However imperfect (or offensive) we may be at times, our stand for the purity of His Church and His Truth must continue. We desire to see the visible church return to it's biblical foundation. We desire to see a church where the Truth revealed in God's Word is preached and taught in all it's fullness; where the sacraments of baptism and the Lord's Supper are prominant. We desire to see the church seek to please God, not man. We desire all of these things with the motivation of seeing God glorified, honored and worshiped in Spirit and Truth.
2 Timothy 4:1 I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: 2preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. 3 For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, 4and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. 5As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.

In its beginning Protestantism assumed the position of believing all the great doctrines of the Christian faith. The creeds of all the great historic denominations are wonderful creeds. The Westminster Confession of Faith is umparalleled in my estimation, but it is now largely repudiated by the church that owned it for years. The Heidelberg Catechism is a marvelous confession, but who is following it? Who believes these wonderful creeds in our day? The churches have a form of godliness but are denying the power thereof.
This is a heart-searching message for this hour because we are living in the time of the Laodicean church and of the Philadelphian church. Both of them are side by side, and there is a great bifurcation in Christianity today. It is not in denominations, and it is not Romanism and Protestantism. The great bifurcation consists of those who believe the Word of God and follow it, love it, obey it, and those who reject it. That, my friend is the line of division today!
Keep speaking the Truth because it does "matter"!!!

In the church today we sing:
The Church's one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord;
She is His new creation by water and the word:
From heaven He came and sought her to be His holy bride;
With His own blood He bought her, and for her life He died.
"The Church's One Foundation"
-Samuel J. Stone
Yet the inscription on the cathedral in Lubeck, Germany, is still true:
Thus speaketh Christ our Lord to us:
Ye call Me Master and obey Me not.
Ye call Me Light and see Me not.
Ye call Me Way and walk Me not.
Ye call Me Life and choose Me not.
Ye call Me Wise and follow Me not.
Ye call Me Fair and love Me not.
Ye call Me Rich and ask Me not.
Ye call Me Eternal and seek Me not.
Ye call Me Noble and serve Me not.
Ye call Me Gracious and trust Me not.
Ye call Me Might and honor Me not.
If I condemn you, blame Me not.
I really like your blog.
I have a question: Would you mind to provide some teaching on hermeneutics?
Thanks,
Bret

Josh, I thought you might appreciate the article I wrote tonight spurred on by your 9+ edifying emails that spurred me onto love and good deeds...

Thanks for the article.
I think where we differ is that we are commanded in the Bible to warn the flock of error as well as proclaim the unadulterated Gospel of Jesus Christ. I choose to do both, warn and proclaim. I try to be balanced and I certainly do not want to be known as a watch dog blog.
Are we not to warn the sheep of men like Rob Bell or Brian McClaren? Are they brothers in Christ?
If your church begins reading "The Shack" should you not warn people of the dangers of that book because you consider the author a brother? Must we go to that author first?
This, I believe is where you and I go our seperate directions.
I am doing my best to glorify God through this blog. I apologize if I have offended you. That was not my intention.
Blessings,
Josh
Thank you for your message of light in a world deceived by darkness. God bless you for standing on the truth.
We all are called to proclaim God's word now more than ever.
